QUITO. My first day in Ecuador. Mi primer día en Ecuador
El norte de Quito, la capital de Ecuador, es la parte más nueva de la ciudad y donde se centra la actividad comercial. Es en esta zona donde nos hospedamos, en el Hotel Sheraton. / The north part of Quito, Ecuador's capital, is the newest and modern part of the city, where the commercial activity concentrates. We were staying at the Sheraton Hotel in this part of the city.
El 8 de Abril llegué a Quito. Cuando pude ver esa enorme ciudad desde la ventana del avión, no lo podía creer. Parecía extenderse por de manera interminable: edificios altos, montañas pobladas, muchos colores.
Jose, el guía de la cuidad que nos acompañaría los primeros días del viaje, me estaba esperando a la salida del aeropuerto. No habíamos llegado al carro cuando ya estaba haciendo preguntas: ¿qué tan grande es la ciudad? ¿cuántos habitantes tiene? ¿cuál es el nivel de vida de los habitantes? ¿qué tan alta está la ciudad? Él me respondió a todas mis preguntas, pero por supuesto que yo lo olvidé y tuve que visitar un website para recordar. Quito está a más de 2750 msnm, tiene 1.8 millones de habitantes y tiene 50 km de largo y 5 de ancho… yo habría jurado que era más. Una de las cosas que no olvidé de los comentarios de Jose es que en Quito la gente no confía en los bancos, entonces prefieren comprar un carro y por eso los carros en la ciudad son muy nuevos, como el suyo!
Holbrook Travel es la compañía responsable de este maravilloso viaje. He trabajado para ellos como instructora de fotografía para los tours Exploritas en Costa Rica y me pidieron viajar a Ecuador para compartir con los fotógrafos de allá.
El centro histórico de la ciudad aún guarda mucho de su aire colonial, y se encuentra al sur de la ciudad. The Historic Center of the city still keeps a Colonial feeling, and it is located in the south of the city.
April 8th I arrived to Quito. As I could see the city from the plane’s window I could not believe it. It looked so big, almost endless: tall buildings, populated mountains, many colors.
Jose, our tour guide for the first part of the trip, was waiting for me at the airport. I started asking questions almost immediately: how big is the city? how many inhabitants it has? what is the standart of living of its people? how tall is the city again? He answered to all of my questions, but off course I forgot everything and I had to go look on a website to remember. Quito is at 9022 feet above see level, it has 1.8 million inhabitants, it is 50 km long and 5 km wide… I thought it would be more. One of the things that Jose said and I did not forget is that in Quito people don’t trust Banks, so they rather buy a new car than safe the money on the bank, so that is why the cars in the city are very new, like his!
Holbrook Travel is the company responsible for this wonderful trip. I have worked for them as a Photography Instructor with the Exploritas tours and so they asked me to travel down there to share with the photographers leading in Ecuador.

The next day, after a photography class given by Tarik Nuñez, the photographer leading the trip in Quito, we hit the road and went walking around the city, specifically the Historical Center of Town. The photography opportunities where magnificent. I love to photograph people and cities, I love doing street photography, so I had a great time. Quito is a very welcoming city for photographers.
I have already shown you some of the photos I took on this day. I was so excited then that I run to my hotel room to edit and post something. But here are my real favorites. I hope you like them.

Al día siguiente, después de una clase de fotografía precedida por Tarik Nuñez, el fotógrafo que lideró el tour en Quito, nos tiramos a caminar a la calle, específicamente el Centro Histórico de la ciudad. Las oportunidades fotográficas fueron maravillosas. Yo amo fotografiar personas y ciudades, adoro la fotografía de calle, entonces me la pasé super bien. Quito es una ciudad muy acogedora para los fotógrafos.
Ya les he mostrado algunas de mis fotografías de este día. Estaba tan emocionada que me fui corriendo a mi cuarto de hotel a editar y publicar algo. Pero estas son mis favoritas. Espero les gusten.
Cuando vi esta escena no lo podía creer, demasiado curioso y hermoso! No llevaba un objetivo suficientemente largo conmigo, así que tuve que pedir prestado para lograr esta imagen. / When I saw this situation I could not believe it, it is so beautiful and curious at the same time. I wasn't prepare to take this pictures, not a long enough lens with me, so I have to borrow one to take it.
We started our way down to San Francisco's Church area and we run into this kid eating a Mango like the best thing he's ever tasted. He was very nice to us. / Cuando comenzamos a caminar hacia la zona de la Iglesia de San Francisco nos encontramos con este niño, que comía un mango como si fuera lo mejor que jamás había comido. Fue muy amable con nosotros.
A este señor ya le conocen, un joyero retirado en su pequeña casa. Hubiera deseado quedarme todo el día fotografíandole. / This man you already know. He is a retired jeweler at this little house. I wish I had stay photographing him all day, but not possible.

No en todas las iglesias es permitido fotografiar. Esta es la iglesia del convento La Merced, llena de pinturas ofrecidas por fieles agradecidos por un favor concebido. Yo estaba impresionada por la concentración de esta mujer en sus plegarias. / You are not allowed to photograph inside very church. This is the churc of the convent of La Merced, filled with paintings given by believers that wanted to thank for a miracle. I was impressed by this womans focus on her prayers.

Esta bellísima anciana hizo una parada frente a cada santo de la Iglesia de San Francisco. / This beautiful old lady made a stop in front of every single saint statu inside the San Francisco's Church.

We finished the day by the Santo Domingo's Church, with a little practice of night photography. / Terminamos el día en la zona de la Iglesia de Santo Domingo, con una pequeña práctica de fotografía nocturna.
Esta fue mi experiencia en Quito, espero algún día tener la oportunidad de regresar y quedarme por más tiempo. En dos días voy a publicar las fotografías de Otavalo, el segundo día de mi viaje a Ecuador.
