Easter in Cot – The precesion of the Ribbons – Procesión de las cintas

Every holly Wednesday, the community of Cot of Cartago congregates at church for a very special celebration: The Procession of the ribbons. People tie a ribbon of a particular color to the image of the Nazarene and after mass they walk around the town in procession with the statue, holding the other end of that ribbon in their hands. For a good hour they turn into one multitude of colors hoping to get the favor they ask to God. Each color represents a specific petition.
At the end of the procession, the ribbons are collected and they will be sold latter as a type of “charm,” but some manage to get a piece right from the statue to tie around their wrist for a year of blessings.
It’s been years since I wanted to go photograph this procession in Cot of Cartago, one of the special and very different events of Easter in Costa Rica. This year, I finally was able to make it there!

Cada miércoles santo la comunidad de Cot de Cartago se reúne en la iglesia para una celebración muy especial: La Procesión de las Cintas. La gente ata una cinta de un color particular a la imagen del Nazareno y después de misa caminan alrededor del pueblo en procesión con la figura, sujetando el otro lado de la cinta en sus manos. Por una buena hora se convierten en una masa de colores con la esperanza de que se les conceda el favor que le piden a Dios. Cada color representa una petición específica.
Al finalizar la procesión las cintas se recogen y luego se venderán como una especie de “amuletos,” pero algunos logran conseguir su pedacito de cinta directamente del Nazareno para amarrarlo a su muñeca y esperar un año de bendiciones.
Ya son muchos años de querer fotografiar esta procesión en Cot de Cartago, una de las tradiciones más especiales y diferentes que se viven en Semana Santa en Costa Rica. Este año finalmente logré ir!
