Story about Juan and his difficulties in life. A must read for those who admire people overcoming adversities.

This is Juan. I spent a couple of days with him, including his birthday celebration. Here is a little slice of his life.

Juan, 8, does a mathematics practices at his 3rd grade special education class at an elementary school in Oakland on Monday, Sept 12, 2011.

Juan, 8, has struggled with epilepsy since birth. At the age of four months, he started taking a strong medication to help control his attacks.

When he was almost two years old, his family and doctors started recognizing problems in his development. Today, Juan has been diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, although the severity of the disorder is still not fully known.

Two years ago, Juan still could not talk or behave like a normal boy. His mother progressively lowered his epilepsy medication, and today Juan is showing great signs of improvement. Even so, 8-year-old Juan only has the mental and motor skills of a 5-year-old. Juan now attends an elementary school in Oakland, CA. He is in a special education class equal to the 3rd grade.

Juan lives with his mother, father, and two older sisters.

_____________________________________________________

This was my first assignment at my photojournalism class: a feature on an attraction at Golden Gate Park.

As the different subjects were presented, I jump at the opportunity to photograph the Casting Pools… some of you might know very well why, but for those who don’t know, it is because I am dating a very passionate fly fisherman…

I think I did good. I might be missing more faces’ pictures, but I might a chance to do it again soon!

Here are the photos that made it after the scrutiny in class.

ISO 200, 1/80 sec at f 16, -1/3 EV. Taken at 1 pm with polarizing filter

Last Sunday we decided to explore a bit the natural treasures that surround the San Francisco Bay Area… and we ended up at Point Reyes National Seashore. It was so nice to know that less than one hour away from the city we can have nature all around us!

The idea was to get there early… try to take advantage of the beautiful morning light to photograph… but well, one thing after the other, we got there mid morning.

Coming from a tropical light country, once its 10am it is questionable if it would be worth taking the camera out of the bag… the light is so harsh! But we were here and the idea was to photograph, so I took my camera out of the bag anyways…

But what to do? the light was almost above our heads and the pictures would come out all unsaturated and flat.

Without thinking twice, I reached for my circular polarizing filter. No mayor discovery here… that is the answer when you are photographing landscapes with light right above you…

So, I decided to show you a series of photographs with and without polarizing filter (sadly, I did not think about doing this while shooting, so it will be different photographs, but still it shows the diference!). As I show you the photos I will try to explain in very simple words how the filter works and when it is a good idea to use it (and when not!). So hang in there with me, this is going to get complicated…

___________________________________________________

Saturation of colors, especially the blue sky, is the main effect of a polarizing filter when photographing landscapes.

ISO 400, 1/80 sec at f 22, -2/3 EV. Taken at 11:20 am with polarizing filter.

We are talking here about a filter, and what a filter does is basically separate things we don’t want from things we want. Since photography is all about light, when we use a filter – any kind – we are separating certain parts of the light that we don’t want from what we do want.

Visible light consists of a series of electromagnetic waves, and as it name stands, this energy moves in a wave pattern. But there are several waves in one beam of light and not all of them oscillate in the same plane while they travel from one place to the other. Also, the size of the oscillation (wave length) is different for each “member” of the beam of light (that difference is actually the one responsible for the different colors! very important!).

So, if you have a filter that separates the different waves in one beam of light according to its length, you are basically separating the light by colors. And those are the filters we used to use in film photography to warm up the light or cool it down!

Now, when we are using a polarizing filter, we are not separating different wave lengths; we actually need and want all of them to make it to the sensor, so all the colors in the scene are represented in our photograph. But since those colors might be formed by waves in different planes, we just need to get them organized so instead of traveling divided in different planes we unite them all in one plane and make the color “stronger”, or should I say, more saturated! This organization will imply getting ride of some waves in certain planes and making sure that the ones that make it to the other side of the filter are traveling organized.

The circular polarizing filter has two different filters on it.

The first one (the one we twist around) is a linear polarizer, and this is the one responsible for getting rid of the waves that we don’t need. How? Well, imagine the filter is made out of a series of solid lines, all parallel. In between those lines there will be some empty space to let the some light through. But only the waves that are oscillating in a plane parallel to the lines will make it through, and the others will be sent back. That is why it is so important to twist this section around because we will be then selecting which plane interests us more, and it will give us a better look of what we are photographing.

The second element of the filter will just make sure that the waves are organized again to travel in a circular pattern (circular polarization), because that is important for the auto (focus, metering) mechanism inside the camera to work.

Here is a little graph that I found on Wikepedia that explains what I just wrote.

______________________________________________________________

Taken from Wikipedia Commons. / Tomado de Wikipedia Commons.

Now… when to use it when photographing landscapes?

Well, the best results will be seen when you are photographing in a 90 degree angle from the sun. That means that the Sun could be at your left or right or above you when you are photographing.

Why? Because we would like to only let through the waves that are oscillating in a plane that is perpendicular to the main direction that the light is traveling, as those are the ones that will give us the colors that we want.

Let me show you a photo, taken with a wide angle lens (16mm) that shows how the effect changes as the angle with the light changes.

_________________________________________________________

At the Badlands. Can you see how it gets darker on the right top corner?

With my 16mm lens, and no drastic changes on the color of the sky, always at 90 degrees from the sun. This photo I had to expose at 0EV to have more details on the shadows.

The good thing about photographing with a polarizer filter while the sun is right above your head is that, no matter where you look, you will always be 90 degrees from the sun!

Now, when else will a polarizing filter be useful?

Reflections! over the water, on a window… You will use the filter to get rid of the light that carries the information of the reflection, that is traveling in a different plane than the light that has the information of whatever is behind the reflection. The photo below will show you an example.

_________________________________________________________________

At Yellowstone, sinkholes. / En Yellowstone, dolina.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!

The last thing I would like to say is that since you are filtering the light, you will always get less light through the lens than there really is, so be careful! That will affect your exposure!

Therefore, unless on a tripod photographing a motionless object, do not use the polarizing filter when it is a dark scene… It probably wont help you improve your photograph, and it most likely will make you suffer with a slow shutter speed!

________________________________________________________

I am lazy... my polarizing filter will fit both my wide angle and telephoto lens, but I did not change it from one to the other while photographing in Point Reyes...
