Worth the wait… Vale la pena esperar…

Let me tell you the story of my favorite cactus… I have a little cactus forest in my room, I really love it and It took me a long time to finally feel really happy with it.
My favorite cactus is my favorite because it has the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen on a cactus… this is the third plant like this I have, the first one died when I planted it on a new pot, the second one I gave away and this one I found on a store in the middle of one of my photo tours over a year go and I had to buy it… it is hard to find! so it traveled with me the entire tour! Right after I got home it flowered. I was SO happy!
Then my favorite cactus got a very strange and nasty kind of fungus….  I had to clean it all the time, wash it, brush it, put chemicals on it, until I finally got the fungus off the plant… I thought I was going to loose it!!!
And then, a few weeks ago, a bunch of flowers started to come out of one of the new branches that grew after I got ride of the fungus… It flower a few days latter…. and It amazed me with three flowers over 5 weeks.

Déjenme contarles la historia de mi cactus favorito… Tengo un pequeño bosque de cactus en mi cuarto que me tomó mucho tiempo poder hacerlo ver como me gusta.
Mi cactus favorito es mi favorito porque tiene la flor más hermosa que yo jamás haya visto en un cactus… Esta es la tercera planta como esta que compro, la primera murió cuando la replanté a una nueva maceta, la segunda la regalé y esta última la encontré en una tienda durante uno de mis tours de fotografía más o menos hace un año… tuve que comprarla! son tan difíciles de encontrar! así que viajó conmigo durante todo eses tour… Justo después de que llegué a casa floreó. Yo estaba TAN feliz!
Pero mi cactus favorito se contagió de un extraño y malvado hongo… Tuve que limpiarlo constantemente, lavarlo, cepillarlo, ponerle químicos, hasta que finalmente le logré quitar el hongo… Pensé que lo iba a perder!!!
Y en eso, hace unas semanas, un grupo de flores empezó a retoñar de una de las ramas que creció después del hongo… Unos días después floreó… Y me mantuvo asombrada con tres flores durante 5 semanas.

Getting my cactus to bloom took a lot of work, care, dedication and preoccupation. But it gave me one kind of joy that I love to experience: when due to your effort and determination you get something you really really want.
The experience with my favorite cactus turned out to be a fascinating analogy to my life for the past months (almost years)…

Lograr que mi cactus floreara tomó mucho trabajo, cariño, dedicación y preocupación. Pero me dio el tipo de felicidad que me encanta experimentar: cuando, debido a esfuerzo y determinación, uno logra algo que quiere mucho mucho.
La experiencia con mi cactus favorito resultó ser una fascinante analogía de mi vida en los últimos meses (casi años)…

In March 2010 I was awarded the Inter American Press Association Scholarship, which granted me money to attend a university in the US for a year. I was SO happy! that was the first bloom from a lot of work and determination that started in November 2009, when I applied for the scholarship for the second time.
Then more care, energy and time had to be put into this desire: to attend a school that will help me become a better photojournalist.
The process was long and a bit tiring… I had to look at so many schools’ journalism programs to find the ones that would not only fit my wishes but also my wallet limitations. Then I had to apply.
There were some major disappointments on the way… But I never stop looking, hoping, sending papers, trying!
And just a few days after my cactus bloom, all the stars lined up to lighten my way to my new adventure.
Starting this August I will attend the San Francisco State University as a Senior Transfer in the Journalism Major, the photojournalism concentration. Hopefully in no more that two years I will have my bachelors as a Photojournalist.
Everything is ready for my departure: I have a passport, a student visa, a plane ticket… my bags are starting to shape… I was just missing one thing… To share my happiness with you.
So, I’m leaving my beautiful country this month, and from August on you will find in photographing in the streets of San Francisco and in the wild of California… Come find me!

En marzo del 2010 me otorgaron la beca de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa, la cual me da dinero para asistir a una universidad en los Estados Unidos por un año. Estaba TAN feliz! esa fue la primera flor resultado de mucho trabajo y determinación que inició en Noviembre del 2009 cuando apliqué a la beca por segunda vez.
Y entonces,  tuve que invertir más cuido, energía y tiempo en este deseo: asistir a una universidad que me ayudará a ser una mejor fotoperiodista.
El proceso fue largo y algo cansado… Tuve que mirar muchísimos programas de periodismo en muchas escuelas paa encontrar aquellas que se ajustaban a mis deseos y también a las limitaciones de mi billetera. Luego tuve que aplicar a esas escuelas.
Hubo algunas desilusiones en el camino… Pero nunca dejé de buscar, aplicar, esperar, mandar papeles, tratar!
Y justo unos días después de que mi cactus floreó, todas las estrellas se alinearon para iluminar el camino hacia mi nueva aventura.
Empezando en Agosto seré alumna en la Universidad del Estado en San Francisco en el último año de la carrera de Periodismo, en la concentración de Fotoperiodismo. Y espero que en no más de dos años tendré mi bachillerato como fotoperiodista.
Todo está listo para mi partida: Tengo pasaporte, visa de estudiante, boleto aéreo… mis maletas están empezando a tomar forma… Sólo me faltaba una cosa… Compartir mi felicidad con ustedes.
Así que me voy de mi bello país este mes, y a partir de agosto pueden encontrarme fotografiando en las calles de San Francisco y en la Califormia salvaje… Vengan a buscarme!
