Inspiring words, listen to many versions of the story. / Palabras inspiradoras, escuche varias versiones de la historia.

My sister introduced me this weekend to an amazing speech. The speaker’s name is Chimamanda Adichie, and she explains, with grace and fluency, why it is so dangerous to hear only one version of the story.
I invite you to take 20 minutes of your life to listen to a great argument.

A few weeks ago I finished reading a very inspiring book: “Witness in our Time” by Ken Light. He interviewed living documentary photographers about their work and their commitment as communicators.
Adichie’s words are just the perfect complement to the words of many of my role models. The resposability that documentary photographers and photojournalist have is to make sure that a version of the story is told, hopefully one that was not been told before, hoping that those that see it will get a better idea of what reality is: complex and many-sided.
I want to share some of the words of those photographers with you:
“Guns and bombs might win the war, but ignorance would surely lose the peace … We may differ in race, religion, language, wealth, and politics, but look what we have in common – dreams, the comforts of home, the hunger for love. With photographs, I thought I might help some of us better understand the strangers who live on the other side of the world – and on the other side of the town.” Wayne Miller.
“It’s a very great honor and a privilege to be able to enter people’s lives. It’s very humbling. The most important thing which sets photography I like against most of which I heat is respect. You don’t get anything decent unless you have the respect. When you’re sincere, then people will work with you. If you put in enough time, you can be invisible.”  Jill Freedman.
“People ought to know. I’m just the messenger.” Antonin Kratochvil.
Two important news shock me this weekend.
On a small level, Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly took an extra day to choose its president and the rest of the board. The first time in history. Finally they opposition got all of the posts. Also, first time in the history of the country.
On an international level, Osama Bin-Laden was killed. And this raced many celebrations and also many questions around the world. Another moment that will make a mark in history.
I was not expecting to relate the speech and the written words with historical news events, but I guess it is just too appropiate to deny it.
PLEASE, no matter what your heart feels, GET MORE THAN ONE VERSION OF THE STORY.
THE MESSENGERS ARE OUT THERE, you just have to pay attention to their interpretation.

Este fin de semana mi hermana me presentó un discurso asombroso. La oradora se llama Chimamanda Adichie, y ella explica, con gracia y fluidez, por qué es tan peligroso escuchar sólo una versión de la historia.

Hace algunas semanas terminé de leer un libro muy inspirador. “Testigos en nuestro tiempo” por Ken Light. Él entrevistó a muchos fotógrafos documentales sobre su trabajo y el compromiso que tienen como comunicadores.
Las palabras de Adichi son el complemento perfecto para los escritos de muchos fotógrafos que admiro. La responsabilidad de los fotógrafos documentales y fotoperiodistas es asegurarse que alguna versión de la historia es narrada, esperando que se trata de la que nunca antes había sido mencionada, y tal vez así aquellos que ven las imágenes tendrán una mejor idea de lo que la realidad es: compleja y multifacética.
Quiero compartir las palabras de algunos de esos fotógrafos con ustedes: (disculpen la traducción, la hice yo…)
“Armas y bombas podrán ganar la guerra, pero la ignorancia puede ciertamente perder la paz … Podemos diferenciarnos por la raza, la religión, el lenguaje, saludo y políticas, pero mira lo que tenemos en común – sueños, el comfort de un hogar, el hambre de amor. Con fotografías pensé que podría ayudar a algunos de nosotros a entender a los extraños que viven en el otro lado del mundo – y en el otro lado de la ciudad.” Wayne Miller.
“Es un gran honor y privilegio poder entrar en la vida de la gente. Es un honor. Lo que separa la fotografía que amo de las muchas cosas que odio es el respeto. Uno no optiene nada descente a menos que tenga respeto. Cuando uno es honesto, entonces la gente trabajará con uno. Si uno dedica suficiente tiempo, se puede ser invisible.”  Jill Freedman.
“La gente tiene que saber. Yo soy sólo el mensajero.” Antonin Kratochvil.
Dos importantes eventos noticiosos me impactaron este fin de semana.
A nivel local, la asamblea legislativa de Costa Rica necesitó de un día extra para elegir a su directorio. La primera vez en la historia. Finalmente la oposición ganó todos los puestos del mismo. También, primera vez en la historia del país.
A nivel internacional, Osama Bin-Laden fue asesinado. Y esto ha generado muchas celebraciones y cuestionamientos alrededor del mundo. Otro momento que dejará huella en la historia.
No tenía pensado relacionar el discurso y las palabras escritas con los eventos históricos noticiosos, pero creo que es demasiado apropiado para negarlo.
POR FAVOR, sin importar lo que su corazón sienta, REVISEN MÁS DE UNA VERSIÓN DE LA HISTORIA.
