Where are they? ¿Dónde están?
This is how the sky looked a week ago at the beach of Ostional. Even knowing that the rain could get us stuck in this little town (because the rivers could rise due to the rain) we got to Ostional hoping to see thousands of turtles, but they were not there. /Así lucía el cielo sobre la playa de Ostional la semana pasada. Aunque sabíamos que podíamos quedar atrapados en este pueblito (porque los ríos podían crecer debido a la lluvia) llegamos con la esperanza de fotografiar miles de tortugas, pero ellas no estaban ahí.
Every last quarter moon, for decades, it’s known that thousands or at least hundreds of Olive Ridley Turtles arrive to the beach of Ostional to lay their eggs. The massive arrival of turtles is specially big during the months of August, September and October, when there is so many turtles that they come to shore not only during the night, but also during the day. I have been to Ostional 4 times before, and when my AP editor asked if I wanted to do that story, I was very happy, I know the place and the people, so I could not be that complicated.
After “confirming” on the phone that the arribada had started, we left for Ostional last Wednesday, but when we arrive, to our surprise, they said that the activity had diminished so much that it was not likely to have an arribada. I freaked out. We stay only one night, and did not see a single turtle laying eggs. The night that we were there, only 26 turtles where counted and non of them came out during sunset or sunrise, something that I have photograph every single time before.

Cada cuarto menguante, por décadas, se espera en la playa de Ostional la arribada de miles sino ciento de Tortugas Lora, que vienen a depositar sus huevos en la arena. La arribada masiva de tortugas es especialmente grande durante los meses de Agosto, Setiembre y Octubre, cuando hay tantas tortugas que salen a la playa no sólo de noche, sino también de día. He ido a Ostional 4 veces antes, y cuando mi editor de AP me preguntó si quería hacer la historia, estaba muy feliz, yo conozco el lugar y la gente, entonces no podía ser tan complicado.
Después de “confirmar” por teléfono que ya había iniciado la arribada, nos fuimos para Ostional el miércoles pasado, pero al llegar, y para nuestra sorpresa, la actividad había disminuido drásticamente y era muy poco probable que llegara la arribada. Casi me muero de la angustia. Nos quedamos sólo una noche y no vimos una sola tortuga. La noche que estuvimos ahí sólo se contaron 26 tortugas y ninguna llegó a la playa durante el atardecer o el amanecer, algo que siempre he fotografiado antes.

In march 2008 I went to Ostional twice, one of those times coincided with the last quarter moon. I took this pictures early morning. / En marzo del 2008 fui a Ostional dos veces, una de esas coincidió con el cuarto menguante. Tomé esta foto temprano en la mañana.
I really do not know what is happening with the turtles. And to conclude something about this situation I should ask many specialist, something that I have not done. I just hope the population of turtles is ok, and they have just decided to use another beach. Or that they are smarter than us and they know something is happening and decided to wait till the danger is over (this is my mom’s theory…) Anyways, I will keep an eye on Ostional, and hopefully I will be back this year and I will photograph the thousands of turtles.
What was nice about my visit to Ostional this time is that I got to witness and help a few baby turtles get out of their nests and make it to the see. Under a very strong rainstorm I had to fight with many vultures and wood storks so they would not eat the little turtles (they did beat me on a few). For me, that made it worth the time and effort, not sure it is the same for the agency, thought. Latter that morning, we got the chance to photograph a couple more that made it out of the sand a little bit latter.

Realmente no tengo idea de qué está pasando con las tortugas. Para poder concluir algo tendría que hablar con muchos especialistas, algo que no he hecho. Yo sólo espero que la población de tortugas se encuentra bien y que simplemente decidieron utilizar otra playa. O que ellas son más inteligentes que nosotros y saben que algo está sucediendo y decidieron esperar hasta que pase el peligro (esta es la teoría de mi mamá…) De todas formas, estaré atenta a lo que ocurra en Ostional, y tal vez este año puedo regresar y fotografiar los miles de tortugas.
Algo que fue muy lindo de este viaje es que pude presenciar y ayudar a algunas tortugas bebé a salir de sus nidos y llegar al mar. Bajo una tormenta muy fuerte tuve que pelear con muchos zopilotes y cigüeñas para que no se comieran a las pequeñitas (ellos me vencieron con algunas). Para mi, esto hizo que valiera el tiempo y el esfuerzo, pero no estoy segura de que sea así para la agencia. Más tarde esa mañana, tuvimos la oportunidad de fotografiar un par mas de pequeñas que salieron de la arena un poco atrasadas.

I was very disappointed this time, because the beach seamed abandoned and let into the hands of turtle eggs predators, like this dog, who I saw many places digging for eggs to eat. / En este viaje fue muy triste y decepcionante porque la playa se sentía abandonada en manos de los depredadores de huevos, como este perro, el cual vi en muchos lugares escarbando en busca de huevos para comer.
Otros depredadores de huevos, como los zopilotes y las cigüeñas, también aprovechaban el trabajo de los perros. / Other predators, like vultures and storks, also took advantage of the work of the dogs.
En algunas secciones de la playa, la marea había acumulado los restos de los huevos depredados, era un panorama muy triste. / In other sections of the beach, the tide had accumulated the left over of the eaten eggs. It was a very sad site.
I just really hope that, no matter where they are, they're doing fine. / Solo espero que, no importa dónde estén, estén bien.

De verdad que pena Mónica que esta vez no llegaran las tortugas, yo me imagino las ganas que usted tenía de tomarles fotos. Creo que así es la naturaleza, siempre van a existir los depredadores y usted capturó esta parte de la historia. Me siento feliz al ver que cuando menos unas ”cuantas” tortuguitas se pudieron salvar.

Hola, Monica. Interesante el post. A lo menos lograste unas fotos stock que muestran los retos que enfrenta esta especie de tortuga ahi en Ostional.
