Ultimo amanecer – Last Sunrise

Our last exploration of Galapagos was at North Seymor Island.
This day, unlike every other day of my trip, I overslept… but do not worry, I got up just in time to jump on our dingy to go to the island.  I am very happy that Jaime, our great leader (and my alarm clock for the day) decided the day before to leave for the island really early so we got there at 6am. The sun was coming up when we started walking on the island and  so we greeted the new day together with hundreds of birds that were flying above us.
The highlight of this island is the Magnificent Frigate Bird (you will see a couple of photos next). It is amazing how desperate males can get to capture the lady’s heart. This poor bird-boy has a huge scarlet pouch in its throat that he inflates to call the female’s attention and then to mate and reproduce. That is the sole purpose of its pouch.
Besides the Frigate and its pouch, we got to photograph some more blue-footed boobies but, this time we were so close it was insane! I can tell you that at some point my camera was less than 20 cm away from the bird. This is what amazed my the most about Galápagos, the fact that humans are not – yet – a threat to the animals, so they do not run away from us, unlike most animals in Costa Rica.
After the walk on North Seymor we ran to the boat to get our luggage and then to the airport. That was it… our trip in the archipelago was over, but we were filled with incredible memories in our minds and photographs in our computers!

Nuestra última exploración en el archipiélago fue la isla Norte Seymor.
Este día, a diferencia de todo el resto del viaje, me quedé dormida… pero no se preocupen, porque me levanté a tiempo para saltar al bote que nos llevaba a la isla. Yo estoy muy feliz de que Jaime, nuestro increíble líder (y mi despertador en este día) decidió el día anterior que partiríamos muy temprano a la isla, por lo que llegamos a las 6am. El sol estaba saliendo cuando comenzamos nuestra caminata, así que pudimos darle la bienvenida al nuevo día junto a los cientos de pájaros que volaban sobre nuestras cabezas.
La estrella de esta isla es la Fragata Magnífica (verán varias fotos a continuación). Es increíble lo desesperados que pueden estar los machos por ganar el corazón de las damas.  Este pobre pájaro tiene una enorme bolsa de color escarlata en su cuello, que infla para llamar la atención de la hembra y luego aparearse y reproducirse. Este es el único propósito de esta bolsa.
Además de la Fragata y su bolsa, también pudimos fotografiar más Piqueros de Patas Azules pero, esta vez estábamos tan cerca que era una locura! Les puedo asegurar que en algún momento me cámara estuvo a menos de 20 cm del pájaro. Esto es lo que más me asombró de Galápagos, el hecho de que los seres humanos no son – todavía – una amenaza para los animales, entonces no huyen de nosotros, contrario a lo que sucede en Costa Rica.
Después de la caminata por la isla Norte Seymor corrimos al barco a recoger nuestro equipaje y luego al aeropuerto. Y eso fue todo… nuestro viaje por Galápagos había terminado, pero nos íbamos llenos de increíbles recuerdos en nuestras mentes y de fotografías en nuestras computadoras.







Ahora les voy a mostrar las mejores fotos que logré durante los momentos de esnórkel.
Las fotos, bonitas no son, por eso quiero hacer un par de aclaraciones. Primero, las tomé con cámaras desechables de negativos, algunas de dudosa procedencia (y que además nunca entendí bien cómo funcionaban). Segundo, para aquellos que no me conocen, nadar no es un problema para mí, pero si es en el mar, la cosa cambia, entonces además de tener que lidiar con la cámara, tuve que lidiar con mis propios temores. Y por último, y debido a lo anterior, nunca había hecho esnórkel, entonces también estaba lidiando con aprender este deporte. AH! casi lo olvido, y el escaneo es de muy mala calidad (excusas, yo sé, sólo excusas…)
Pero en fin, son bonitos recuerdos y los quiero compartir con ustedes.

Now I want to show you the best shots I got while snorkeling.
The pictures are not good, and because of that I want to clarify a few things. First, I took them with a disposable film camera, some of a very doubtful origin (and that I never got to figure out completely). Second, for those of you who do not know me, swimming is not a problem for me, unless I am in the sea, so besides dealing with the tricky equipment, I had to work my own fears. And last, and related to the one before, I had never snorkel before, so I was also learning how to practice this sport. AH! I almost forgot, I am showing a very bad quality scanning (excuses, I know, nothing but excuses…)
But anyways, they are pretty memores and I want to share them with you.
