OTAVALO Market/Mercado

Our second day in Ecuador took us to Otavalo and its markets. The town of Otavalo is located two hours north of Quito and it has a majority of Indigenous population dedicated mainly to the trade of textile crafts.
To get there, we left the hotel really early, in order to make it in time for the animal’s market.
Once in the market, we spent around an hour photographing the merchants and their produce. The experience was very interesting because, I don’t know if because of some particular believe or because of some recent decision, many of the indigenous people did not liked to be photograph, which made my shooting a little harder than usual. Unless my job is on the line, I don not like to photograph people that don’t want to be photographed. I have a lot of respect for other people’s image and I understand that when they let me photograph them they are sharing with me their most precious belonging: their identity. Therefore, the images you will see from Otavalo might not be as interesting. I don’t know anymore… you tell me… should I have been more aggressive with my photography?
Anyways, the collection you will see next are my favorite images form this particular day when we visited the animal’s market, the fruit and vegetable’s market and the handcraft’s market (I must confess that on the last one I was more into shopping that photographing… very hard to avoid)
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
