Guayaquil, Ecuador

Llegamos a Guayaquil a principios de la tarde. Nos estaba esperando un guía local para llevarnos a visitar el malecón y algunos de los puntos interesantes de la ciudad. La primera parada fue en un parque, del que – por supuesto – no recuerdo el nombre. Caminamos un poquito, y yo no pude evitar notar que habían algunas personas sentadas junto a algo que parecía ser una cámara de formato medio.
Al final me decidí a acercarme a un señor y preguntarle si eso era una cámara. Era difícil de creer porque se trataba de una caja de madera muy sencilla, con un lente de fuelle en un trípode bastante arcaico. Pero resultó que si era un fotógrafo, que podía usar su camarita digital compacta para tomar fotos pasaporte, o su cámara artesanal para tomar fotos en blanco y negro.
Yo, sin pensarlo mucho (y apoyada por el interminable y contagioso entusiasmo de Jaime, nuestro guía en Galápagos que aún nos estaba acompañando en Guayaquil) le pedí una foto del grupo, sólo para justificar tomarle a él una foto y recibir respuestas a mis múltiples preguntas.
Resultó que, Don Agton Calderón Leones, tenía 40 años de dedicarse a tomar fotografías de personas en este mismo parque, y que gracias a nuestra compra él había logrado duplicar su ganancia del día.
Yo no pude parar de fotografiarlo todo el tiempo que estuvimos con él, y me sentí super contenta cuando me regaló el negativo de la fotografía.
Este tipo de oportunidades son las que me hacen agradecer todas las mañanas la bendición de ser fotógrafa!
Empezó a llover tan fuerte que no pudimos visitar el Malecón, pero como yo tenía la mañana libre del día siguiente, aproveché para visitarlo, con mis amigos Carole y Jordan.

We got to Guayaquil early afternoon of that day. A local guide was waiting to show us around the important spots of the city, like the Malecón.  The first stop was a park, that I – of course – can not remember the name. We walk a little bit around it and then I could not avoid noticing that there was a man with something that looked like a medium format camera next to him.
Finally I decided to approach a man to ask him if it was really a camera. It was hard to believe because it was a wooden box with something that look like a lens with a bellows and a very archaic tripod. But it turns out that this man was actually a photographer that uses his point-and-shoot to take passport images of people and then his handcrafted camera for black and white photos.
I, without thinking too much, and supported by Jaime (our very enthusiastic guide from Galápagos that was still with us at Guayaquil) asked him to take a picture of the group, just to justify all the pictures I wanted to take of him and the answer to all of my questions.
It turns out that, Mr Agton Calderón Leones, has been a photographer at that same park for 40 years, and thanks to our buy he duplicated the earnings of that day.
I could not stop photographing the entire time we had with him, and I was so happy when he gave me the negative as a present.
It’s this kind of photo opportunities that makes me so thankful for being a photographer.
After the time in then park it started raining so hard that we had to do the rest of the tour on the bus. But since I was leaving late the next day I got to photograph the Malecon anyways, with my friends Carole and Jordan.
