Galápagos… finally… finalmente
This was the first close encounter with Galapago's fauna, a Magnificent frigate bird perched on a post of our yacht YOLITA II. Here we are waiting to disembark in Bachas Beach, Santa Cruz Island. / Este fue el primer encuentro cercano con la fauna de Galápagos, una Fragata perchada en un poste de nuestro yate YOLITA II. Estabamos esperando para desembarcar en playa Bachas, Isla Santa Cruz.
On Sunday we started our way down (from over 9000 feet to cero!) to the Galápagos, even though this might seam like a total adventure it was pretty easy, a little over an hour on a plane and we were in Baltra Island, where the Galapago’s airport is located. The airport is pretty simple, the only thing that I could compare it to is the Liberia’s airport in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, for those who have been there.
I was very impress with the amount of people that travel to the Galápagos. Originally I was expecting to see a little plane with maybe a couple dozen passengers, but it was a big plane with enough sits for more than one hundred people. I guess I could find this out before going, but I did not, as many other things I had no idea about. You have to understand that I never ever imagined I was going to go to the Galápagos, in my entire life, and I knew about my trip couple of weeks before flying, so not much time to “get ready”.

El domingo empezamos nuestro descenso (de más de 3000 msnm a cero!) a Galápagos, uno podría pensar que esto es una gran aventura, pero fue bastante sencillo, un poco más de una hora en un avión y estábamos en la Isla Baltra, donde está ubicado el aeropuerto de Galápagos. Es aeropuerto es muy sencillo, comparable con el de Liberia, Guanacaste Costa Rica, para aquellos que lo conocen.
Estaba muy impresionada con la cantidad de gente que viaja a Galápagos. Originalmente estaba esperando un avión pequeño con tal vez un par de docenas de pasajeros, pero era un avión grande con suficientes puestos para más de cien personas. Supongo que pude averiguar sobre esto antes de viajar, pero no lo hice, como no averigué sobre muchas otras cosas. Tienen que entender que yo jamás imaginé viajar a Galápagos, en toda mi vida, y supe del viaje un par de semanas antes de volar, entonces no tuve mucho tiempo de “alistarme” como se debe.
At Bachas Beach there were a lot of Sally Lightfoot Crabs, and I decided I had to get a good picture of these ones so I did no have to worry about them anymore. Well, now that I looked at my photos I don't think a accomplished my goal, luckily I anyways did photograph them in other places. / En Playa Bachas habían muchos Cangrejos Zapaya, y yo decidí que debía tomar una buena foto de ellos para no tener que preocuparme más por lograrlo. Bueno, ahora que miré mi material creo que no logré el objetivo, por dicha igual los fotografié en otros lugares.
Once we left the airport, a bus took us to the dock, where a dinghy was waiting to take us to our home for the next eight days: YOLITA II. The staff at the yacht was amazing with all of us, The food was amazing (very important to me!) and they were all always very helpful and funny. I will always be thankful with all of them because they made our trip even more special.
We had our lunch there and then travel a little bit to our first destination: Bachas Beach in Santa Cruz Island. Santa Cruz is one of the 3 islands that is populated in Galápagos, the one with more people actually, around 15 thousand, and it is the second largest island.
The beach was so beautiful, turquoise water and white sand. We walked for a little bit, we saw many birds flying just above our heads (sometimes too close I might say) and all the crabs on the rocky part of the shore. Then we got to an area where some flamingos where standing, they were very far away for my taste (and by that I mean for my 200mm lens on my 5DMarkII). But close to us there was a Great Blue Heron, so I said to Jaime (our amazing photo expert in the islands) that we should forget about the flamingos and run to get the Heron before it flys away. He was a little surprise about my comment, I mean, why the hurry? but, little did I know (I have always wanted to use that phrase!!!) that animals in the Galápagos do not run/fly away from people…
He agreed to go, but told me to slow down, the heron is going nowhere… I was a little skeptical about his confidence, but I follow the leader (you should always follow your tour leader! 😉 ) and what was my surprise that the heron not only stayed but let us get very close to it. AMAZING! And then I knew… this was going to be a freaking awesome trip!

Nos fuimos del aeropuerto en un bus que nos llevó al muelle, donde un bote neumático nos estaba esperando para llevarnos a nuestra casa por los próximos ocho días: YOLITA II. El personal del yate fue asombroso, la comida estuvo excelente (muy importante para mi!) y siempre fueron muy amables y divertidos. Siempre les estaré agradecida porque hicieron que nuestro viaje fuera aún más especial.
Almorzamos en el yate y luego viajamos un poquito más a nuestro primer destino: Playa Bachas en la Isla de Santa Cruz. Esta isla es la segunda más grande del archipiélago y es una de las 3 islas pobladas de Galápagos, en realidad la que tiene más población, alrededor de 15mil personas.
La playa era hermosa, agua turquesa transparente, arena blanca. Caminamos un poco, vimos decenas de cangrejos en la parte rocosa de la playa y muchísimas aves volando sobre nuestras cabezas (muy cerca en algunas ocasiones). Luego llegamos a una zona donde habían flamingos, pero demasiado lejos para mi gusto (y con gusto quiero decir para mi 200mm con my 5DMarkII). Cerca de nosotros había una Garza Nocturna, entonces le dije a Jaime (nuestro super experto fotógrafo en las islas) que deberíamos olvidarnos de los flamingos y correr a fotografiar la garza antes de que se fuera. Él estaba un poco sorprendido de mi comentario, porqué la prisa? pero, cómo iba yo a saber que los animales en Galápagos no corren/vuelan huyendo de las personas?…
El acordó cambiar de sujeto fotográfico, pero me dijo que no me apurara, que la garza no iba para ningún lado… Yo estaba bien escéptica de su confianza, pero le hice caso a mi líder (unos siempre debe hacerle caso a su tour líder! 😉 ) y mi sorpresa fue que la garza no sólo no voló, sino que nos dejó acercarnos muchísimo. INCREÍBLE! Y fue ahí cuando supe… este iba a ser un viaje imponente!
This is not my best photo, I specially dislike the sticks with the colored plastic bands, but it was marking a turtle nest and the frigate was trying to eat something from it. / Esta no es una de mis fotos favoritas, me disgusta especialmente los palos con las cintas de plástico de colores, pero están marcando un nido de tortuga y la fragata estaba tratando de comerse algo de ahí.

After the walk I kept trying to get a good photo of the crabs. / Después de la caminata traté un rato más de sacar una buena foto de los cangrejos.
Después de la caminata regresamos al YOLITA y navegamos un rato a nuestro siguiente destino. En el caminos decenas de fragatas volaron acompañándonos. Desde la parte más alta del barco las fotografié hasta que se ocultó el sol. Esta es una Fragata juvenil. / After the walk we returned to the YOLITA and we sailed to our next destination. On the way dozens of frigate birds flu keeping us company. From the hightest part of the yatch I photograph them till the sunset. This is a juvenil Magnificent Frigate Bird.
