Elections 2006. / Elecciones del 2006.
Yes… it’s been four years since we chose our last President, and it is time to do it again.
Oscar Arias Sánchez, Nobel Peace Price and president of Costa Rica in 1986-1990, won the re-election in 2006 with only 1.12% more votes than his principal opponent Ottón Solís Fallas. The “rookie” of that election (not really a rookie but not a small party anymore) was Otto Guevara Guth from a Liberal, right wing, party that got 8% of the votes, something unexpected for a country that (I want to say) is more socialist that capitalist.
The picture then was: Oscar Arias Sánchez, National Liberation Party. Ottón Solís Fallas, Citizen Action Party. Otto Guevara Guth, Libertarian Movement Party.
The story for next Sunday is: Laura Chinchilla Miranda, National Liberation Party (former first Vice-president of the present administration). Ottón Solís Fallas, Citizen Action Party (his third round trying to be President). Otto Guevara Guth, Libertarian Movement Party (also, his third round trying to be President).
So, we are in the future but like in the past… very disappointing. I should say that the country has been very skeptical about this elections, we know what they have to offer, we just heard it four years ago AND we have seen how much of that they have actually done and, I speak for myself, it’s not very flattering. BUT, we have a right that many wish to have and I AM GOING TO VOTE NEXT SUNDAY, even if my vote will be more of “the best of the bad” than a convinced and happy vote…
Last Sunday “La Teja” newspaper (yes… I keep working for them! it is fun! I miss doing photojournalism A LOT) asked me to cover the final convention of the National Liberation Party, and I did it. So I am going to show you some of the photos taken that afternoon.
In the days to come, I plan on photographing the other 2 candidates, just for fun, and I will be posting that too. Sunday, I will have the pleasure to start another Exploritas photo tour, and with them I will explore some of the action on the most important day for Costa Rica’s democracy, a plus for them, not only they will photograph nature in Costa Rica, but it’s history too… I will post that also!
The feelings today are very much similar to the feelings four years ago. / La sensación hoy es muy similar a la sensación hace cuatro años.
Pues sí… Ya han pasado cuatro años desde que elegimos nuestro presidente, y es momento de hacerlo de nuevo.
Oscar Arias Sánchez, Premio Nobel de la Paz y expresidente de Costa Rica en 1986-1990, ganó la reelección en el 2006 con sólo 1.12% más de votos que su oponente principal, Ottón Solís Fallas. El “novato” de esas elecciones (no realmente el novato, pero no más un partido pequeño) fue Otto Guevara Guth de un partido liberal de derecha, logró un 8% de los votos emitidos, algo inesperado en un país que (quiero decir) is más socialista que capitalista.

La imagen para el próximo domingo es: Laura Chinchilla Miranda, Partido Liberación Nacional (antigua Vice-presidenta de la presente administración). Ottón Solís Fallas, Partido Acción Ciudadana (su tercer intento tratando de ser Presidente). Otto Guevara Guth, Libertarian Movement Party (también, su tercer intento tratando de ser Presidente).
Entonces, estamos en el futuro pero como en el pasado… muy decepcionante. Debo decir que el país está muy escéptico sobre estas elecciones, sabemos lo que nos ofrecen los candidatos, lo acabamos de oír hace cuatro años Y hemos visto lo que en realidad han hecho y, hablo por mi misma, no es muy halagador. PERO, tenemos el derecho a algo que muchos desean y por eso YO VOY A VOTAR EL PRÓXIMO DOMINGO, aunque mi voto será más por “lo mejor de lo malo” que un voto convencido y feliz…
El domingo pasado el periódico “La Teja” (si… sigo trabajando para ellos! es divertido! y extraño muchísimo hacer foto periodismo!) me pidió que cubriera la convención final del Partido Liberación Nacional, y lo hice. Entonces les voy a mostrar un poco de las fotos tomadas esa tarde-noche.
En los días que vienen planeo fotografiar los otros dos candidatos, sólo por diversión, y estaré posteando eso también. El domingo tengo el placer de iniciar otro tour de fotografía de Exploritasy con ellos exploraré el día mas importante para la democracia costarricense, un plus para ellos, no sólo podrán fotografiar la naturaleza de Costa Rica, pero también su historia… También estaré posteando eso!
Traditionally (and PLN is one of traditional parties in Costa Rica) the public conventions are in one of main roads in San José. Tradicionalmente (y el PLN es uno de los partidos tradicionales de Costa Rica) son en una de las calles más importantes de San José.
Laura Chinchilla has been anointed by the current President, head of the PLN party, something that is ban by our constitution. / Laura Chinchilla ha sido ungida por nuestro actual presidente, la cabecilla del PLN, algo es que prohibido por nuestra constitución.
El PLN es un partido que nace de un movimiento social muy importante en Costa Rica, por eso sus seguidores son fieles. / The PLN is a party that was born out of a very important social movement in Costa Rica, and because of that their fallowers are faithfull.
The biggest argument against Laura is that she is just a fallowup of the current administration, one that hasn't done such a good job according to many. / La mayor crítica a Laura es que es un simple seguimiento a la administración actual, una que, según muchos, no ha hecho tan buen trabajo.
La Teja has this character called "El Colado" (the sneaker) that tries to find his way into particular situations like Laura Chinchillas dressing room at the convention. / La Teja tiene este personaje llamado "El Colado" que trata de entrar en situaciones particulares como el camerino de Laura Chinchilla en la convesión.
And he found his way in!. / Y logró entrar!.
Y yo pude fotografiarlo! / And I got to photograph him!
