Volcán – Turrialba – Volcano

Hace ya algunas semanas pude ir a ver con mis propios ojos lo que está sucediendo alrededor del Volcán Turrialba, en Cartago, Costa Rica. Este volcán siempre se ha conocido como un volcán activo, pero desde el 2005 su actividad fumarólica y la emisión de gases a aumentado considerablemente, provocando la muerte de la vegetación, la enfermedad de personas que habitan cerca y el deterioro de edificaciones cercanas. Debido a la intensa actividad, el acceso al volcán está prohibido.
Mi “excursión” fue sólo en las faldas del volcán, en antiguas fincas ganaderas que hoy están abandonadas, y el paisaje es realmente impresionante. Las siguientes fotos son las que creo describen mejor la situación.

A few weeks ago I had the chance to see with my own eyes what it’s happening in the surroundings of Turrialba Volcano, in Cartago, Costa Rica. This volcano has always been known as an active volcano, but since 2005 its activity has increased emitting gases and displaying strong fumaroles, causing destruction of the vegetation, people developing certain illness and the damage of the constructions. Due to this activity, the entrance to the volcano is forbidden.
My “excursion” was only to the side of the volcano, into old cattle farms that have been abandoned. The landscape is just striking. The following pictures are the ones I think describe better the situation.
