And the Lady from Catarina? Y la señora de Catarina?

Ceci… are you there? This one is for you!
I was in Nicaragua last January for 5 days… anybody that has been to Nicaragua will agree with me that 5 days will never be enough there… I always get so many good photos there, that is painful to leave.
Last January was my first time in Catarina, a village with a very nice view looking over the Apoyo Lagoon, a few minutes from Granada.
But this is not the charm of Catarina. Its people and the small town feeling are its charm.
I was walking from the view point down the center of the village (with a group of friend photographers – yes, you, Cox’ crowd!) when I saw this beautiful old lady waking barefoot on the hot road surface. And of course, I could not help myself and I took this picture:

The lady saw me do that and stop. And off course, I had to reply to that reaction: “Madam, you are so brave, walking barefoot on the hot road!”  She laughed, and explained that she was used to it, she liked it, and only wears shoes when cutting cane on the field, because there were too many snakes.
Then, she asked for help: “could you give me ten pesos so I can pay for a dress that the seamstress made for me and wont give me until I pay?”
Well, 10 Cordobas is like 20 cents, so why not?. “Here Madam, take this 50, and get yourself something nice!” She looked at the bill and gave me a strong hug.
And that was it, she decided to stay and pose for quite a few frantic photographers.

Ceci.. estás ahí? esta es para tí!
En enero estuve en Nicaragua por 5 dias… cualquiera que ha estado en Nicaragua estará de acuerdo cuando digo que 5 días no es suficiente… Siempre tomo buenas fotos allá, tanto que duele marcharse.
En este viaje fui por primera vez a Catarina, un pueblito muy bello que tiene vista sobre la Laguna de Apoyo, a unos cuantos minutos de Granada.
Pero la vista no es el encanto de Catarina. Su gente y la sensación de pueblo pequeño son su encanto.
Estaba caminado desde el mirador hacia el centro del pueblo (con un grupo de amigos fotógrafos – si, ustedes, muchedumbre de Cox!) cuando vi a una anciana muy hermosa caminando descalza por el cemento caliente. Por supuesto, no pude evitarlo y tomé la primera foto que ven arriba.
La señora se detuvo al verme hacer esto. Yo tuve que reaccionar y le dije “Señora, que valienta, caminando descalza sobre el cemento caliente!” Ella sonrió y me explicó que estaba acostumbrada, que le gustaba, que sólo usaba zapatos cuando iba a cortar caña porque había muchas culebras.
Luego pidió ayuda: “me regala diez pesos para pagarle a la costurera que me hizo un vestidito y no me lo da hasta que le pague?” Bueno, diez pesos son 20 centavos de dolar, pues por qué no?
“Tome señora, tome estos 50 pesos y cómprese algo bonito!” Ella miró el billete y se emocionó tanto que me abrazó muy fuerte.
Y a partir de ahí, ella decidió quedarse y posar para un poco de fotógrafos frenéticos.
Las últimas fotos arriba son mis favoritas (por cierto, el señor junto a ellas es su compañero de muchos años, no es una relación formal, me aclaró, pero una bien vieja)
