Costa Rica is at the lead in the CONCACAF qualifying round, USA follows, then El Salvador, Honduras, México and Trinidad & Tobago. Amazing things are happening…

¡Ya viene South Africa 2010!

Y el mundo entero se está peleando un puesto…

Costa Rica está a la cabeza de la ronda clasificatoria de la CONCACAF, le sigue USA, luego El Salvador, México y por último Trinidad & Tobago. Cosas increíbles están sucediendo…

Estas fotos son del miércoles pasado, CR vs USA. Yo estuve ahí y fue “bien tuanis”! ¡CR ganó!

El pasado Miércoles tuve la oportunidad de fotografiar el partido Costa Rica – USA de la eliminatoria para el Mundial Sudáfrica 2010. Reuters, la agencia internacional de noticias para la que trabajo, me pidió que ayudara.
Yo estaba bastante nerviosa, hace más de año y medio que no hacia fotos de fútbol, y la verdad es bastante difícil. Uno necesita estar muy atento al juego, listo para disparar y además hay que tener cierta capacidad para anticipar la jugada, algo que se adquiere con la experiencia de fotografiar este deporte o con la pasión por el mismo… Y yo, no tengo ninguna de las dos cosas!
En fin, era una muy buena oportunidad y me decidí a enfrentarlo con todo, sin miedo y con la máxima disposición.
Antes del juego, le pedí a mi jefe y maestro, Juan Carlos Ulate, recordarme cómo se hace para fotografiar fútbol.
La luz del estadio Ricardo Saprissa es pésima, así que tuvimos que trabajar con ISO 3200. Además, colocamos la cámara en modo manual, medimos la luz que es reflejada por la cancha y dejamos en esa medición para todo el partido (de todas formas la luz no va a variar). Esa medición nos dio un f2.8 y una velocidad de 1/320 (recordemos que necesitamos muy buena velocidad para congelar movimiento porque los jugadores se mueven muy rápidamente, así que hay que sacrificar profundidad de campo). Respecto al modo de auto-enfoque, se trabaja en AI SERVO, para que el autofocus “siga” al sujeto enfocado.
Y después de todas esas indicaciones, Juan Ca termina la instrucción con un “cuidado no tiene la foto!” en tono de broma-seriedad…
“Gracias a dios” no me fue nada mal… bueno, la verdad es que ustedes juzguen eso!
Pero debo confesar que tuve una ayuda especial. Juan Ca me dió un cuerpo de cámara Canon EOS Mark II… es una bala!
El enfoque de la cámara pocas veces perdió al sujeto, y su disparo tan rápido también ayudo… Yo siempre digo que uno nunca debe poner de escusa su equipo, hay que conocerlo bien y trabajar con lo que se tenga. Sin embargo, en este caso, debo decir que sin esa cámara no estoy segura de que me habría ido tan bien!
ES TRISTE PARA MI DECIRLO, pero debo aceptar que no tengo razón. Aveces el equipo sí hace la diferencia.

Las Wednesday I had the opportunity to photograph the soccer match between Costa Rica and USA for the qualifying round for the World Cup South Africa 2010. Reuters, the international news agency that I work for, asked me to help.

I was very nervous because I have not photographed soccer in over a year and a half, and to be honest, it is very difficult. You need to be very concentrated, ready to shoot and also you should be able to anticipate the movement, something that you get by practicing a lot of soccer photography or by knowing the game very well… and I don’t have any of those things!

Anyways, it was a great chance and I decided to face it with the best I have, without fear and with my best disposition.

Before the game, I asked my boss and mentor, Juan Carlos Ulate, to remind me how to photograph soccer.

The light at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium is terrible, so we had to work in ISO 3200. Also, we put our cameras in manual mode, measured the light reflected by the field and left that exposure for the entire game (anyways the light was not going to change). The exposure was f2,8 and a shutter speed of 1/320 (remember that we need a good speed to freeze the players’ movement; they are moving very fast, so we have to sacrifice our depth of field). The autofocus we used was AI SERVO, so the camera would follow the focused subject.

And after the reminder, JuanCa finished with a “you better have the shot!” in a joking-but-serious tone…

“Gracias a dios,” I didn’t do too bad… but you can judge that for yourself.

However, I have to confess something. I had special help. JuanCa gave me a Canon EOS Mark II body to work with… and it’s a bullet!

The autofocus almost never lost the subject and the fast shooting helped a lot too… I always say that the equipment should never be an excuse not to do the job… you should have a good knowledge of your equipment and work with what it offers. But this time, I have to say that without that camera I doubt I have had such good results.

IT IS VERY SAD FOR ME TO SAY, but I have to admit that I might be wrong. Sometimes the gear does make the difference.
