Fotografiando la Luna. Photographing the moon.

El pasado 24 de Abril, el Centro para las Artes Alegría otorgó a la imagen arriba una  mención honorífica dentro del concurso de fotografía “Paisaje Húmedo Costarricense.” Un gran honor sin duda, y una gran felicidad, porque esta fotografía simplemente me resulta maravillosa (y no porque la haya tomado yo).
Muchas personas se me han acercado preguntando cómo tomé la imagen, bueno, aquí les va el secreto! 😉

La noche del 2 de febrero del presente año, cuando me encontraba en la zona de San Gerardo de Dota, salí a buscar un claro para poder tomar una fotografía con rastros de estrellas. Sin embargo, y como es de esperar en esta zona, había demasiada nubosidad para poder lograr lo que deseaba. Busqué otro sujeto para fotografíar y me encontré con el cuarto creciente de la Luna acostándose sobre una loma y cubierta por la nubosidad.

La fotografía la tomé con mi cámara Canon 30D y con un teleobjetivo 70-200mm f2.8 y un duplicador 1.4x. Utilicé  ISO 1600 (para lograr una buena velocidad de obturación que permitiera congelar el movimiento de Luna) un f5.0 y una velocidad de ¼ seg. Estos ajustes (utilizando modo de prioridad abertura) se obtuvieron después de indicarle a la cámara que compensara la exposición en menos un paso y un tercio, realizando una medición de la luz localizada sobre la luna. La cámara se encontraba sobre el trípode y se utilizó un cable disparador para evitar agregar vibración en la toma.

El trabajo de post-producción consistió en eliminar el ruido producido por utilizar un ISO tan alto, y en agregar un poco de nitidez a la imagen, necesaria para la impresión. Además, se cortó la imagen un 5% en los costados izquierdo e inferior para eliminar un poco de la sección oscura.

Y eso fue todo!

Cuando vayan a tomar fotos de la luna, recuerden q están tomando fotos de un punto sumamente brillante contra un fondo absolutamente oscuro, entonces, compensen la exposición negativamente…  el cielo no puede ser más o menos oscuro, es oscuro de por sí, y cuando compensan negativamente la luna no se verá tan brillante y podrán rescatar los detalles de su superficie.

Según mi calendario lunar, estamos en cuarto creciente, mañana hay lluvia de meteorítos y el viernes 8 a las 22:01 sale la Luna Llena, así q no hay escusa para no salir a fotografiar!

Last April 24th, the Center for the Arts Alegría gave the image above an  honorable mention at a photo contest called “Humid Landscape of Costa Rica.” A great honor no doubt, and a great happines, because I simple think this photograph is wonderful (and not because I took it).
Many people have approach me asking how I took it, well, here is the secret! 😉
The night of February 2nd of this year, I was in San Gerardo de Dota, and I went out looking for a setting to do star trails. It was very cloudy, something normal in the Cloud Forest, so I could not take the picture I wanted. I started looking for other photographic subject and I found this moon just leaning over the hill, cover in clouds.
I took the photo with my Canon 30D, a 70-200mm lens with a 1.4x extender, camera on a tripod and cable release connected. I used ISO 1600 to improve my shutter speed. I ended up taking the photo at f5.0 and a speed of ¼ of a second. I was shooting on Aperture priority mode, and I was measuring the light over the moon. I used and exposure compensation of one step and one third.
The post-production work was just to eliminate noise, sharpen the image a little bit (because I had to print it) and I cropped 5% of the image on the left and bottom end, to eliminate a little bit of the dark areas (my zoom was not enough!)
And that was all!
When you decide to photograph the moon, remember that you are photographing a very bright spot over a completely dark surface, so, underexpose your image…  the sky can’t simply be darker, it is already as dark as it gets and when you compensate to the negative the moon wont be as bright and you will be able to register all the details on its surface.
According to my moon calendar, we are on a waxing moon, tomorrow their will be a meteorite rain (at least in CR) and on friday we will have a full moon at 22:01 (again in CR), so there is no excuse to go out and photograph!
